The following lists names and locations of towns and communities in Grayson County. Many of these no longer show up on road maps and only a few are incorporated. However, most names are still used to refer to the various sections of the county.

Barton Crossroad (Cross Roads) Junction of Pine Branch Rd. and Flatridge Rd, east of Fox Creek, south of Perkins Ridge. Named after Levi Barton who settled there. Wilson Middle Fox Creek
Baywood (Hampton’s Crossroads) Community South of US 58 at intersections of Old Baywood Rd., Crossroads Rd., and Baywood Store Rd. Name changed to Baywood when mail delivery mixed up with Hampton’s Roads. Named after a bay tree which grew in that area. Wilson Sparta East
Bennington Mill Located on Elk Creek at the eastern junction of 662 and Mt Zion Rd. Elk Creek Elk Creek
Bethel (Harrington Settlement) Located at the headwaters of Elk Creek north of Buck Mountain. Settled following the Revolutionary War. Elk Creek Elk Creek
Blairs Town (Blairtown) Section of southeast Fries that included the homes not owned by the Textile Mill in Fries early history. Providence Fries town map
Bridle Creek Community of Bridle Creek is at the intersection of 58 and 601. Wilson Sparta West
Burton’s Chapel South of Straight Mt and Iron Mt., near Flatridge Gap. Named after John Quincy Adams Burton who moved into community in 1887. The post office, named Yacht PO, was in But ton’s home Wilson Middle Fox Creek
Carsonville At junction of 695 and 691, south of Lundy Knob and Elk Creek. Elk Creek Brierpatch Mt.
Central Community is halfway between Flatridge and Buck Mt., along Middle Fox Creek, where it is joined by Shupe Creek and Clem’s Branch. Community gets its name from the church which was built half way between Chapel Hill Church at Flatridge and Livesay Hall. Wilson Middle Fox Creek
Clito (Clito Mill) Sourtheast of Brierpatch Mountain along Elk Creek and 660. Stephen Welsh vas granted the right to operate a post office in 1889. The post office vas discontinued in 1918. Elk Creek Brierpatch Mt.
Comers Rock Community located at intersection of 611 and 658. Elk Creek Elk Creek
Cox Chapel (Cox’s Chapel) South of New River at intersection of 601 and 708, in an area called the ‘Bend’, bounded on three sides by the New River Old Town Sparta West
Cox’s Ford PO Community does not exist any more. It was on the southeast side of the New River across from the mouth of Peach Bottom Creek and Greek PO on 1897 map. Old Town 1897 map
Cox Mill On 608 southeast of Galax at Carroll County border. Old Town 1897 map
Creola Community not in existence any more. It was along Beaver Creek branch of Meadow Creek, southeast of Baywood. Old Town 1897 map
Cross Roads (Barton Crossroad) East of Fox Creek, at 658 junction with 733, south of Perkins Ridge. Wilson Middle Fox Creek
Dalhart (or Delhart) (Rector’s Cross Roads) Community west of Davis Knob and east of Little River. Settled by Jack Hampton, whose son, Arthur Hampton changed the name in 1906 from Rector’s Cross Roads to Dalhart after a Texas town. Old Town Cumberland

Delhart (Dalhart) At intersection of 622, 623 and 624 west of Davis Knob Old Town Cumberland
Dell Community not in existence any more. It was east of Stephens Creek and Knob, west of Eagle Bottom Creek, north of Stephens Creek Community. PDR 1897 map
Eaglebottom Community in area of Fries. PDR
Edgewater Community not in existence any more. It was halfway between Mouth of Wilson and Volney on Wilson Creek. Wilson 1897 map
Elk Creek This Community is located along Highway 21, North of Pt Lookout. Named after an early settler killed an elk there. Lower Elk Creek is on east side of 21. Elk Creek Elk Creek
Ellis PO Community not in existence. It was west of Boyers Ferry PO, south of Little Rock Creek and east of Peach Bottom Creek. Elk Creek 1897 map
Fairview At intersection of 89 and 821, west of Chestnut Creek in The Glades. Old Town Cumberland Knob
Fairwood Community on Fox Creek and 603, 1.5 miles west of Trout Dale limits. An industrial community growing from the bandmill and chair factory that grew up at the turn of the century. Wilson Trout Dale
Fairy PO Community does not exist any more. It was along Turkey Fork, west of Briarpatch Mountain, on 1897 map. Listed as a post office in 1888-1889. Elk Creek 1897 map
Fallville Community on Knob Fork Creek at junction of 806 and 604. North of Brierpatch Mountain May be named after ‘The Falls’ on the side of Iron Mountain. Providence Brierpatch Mt
Flat Ridge (Flatridge) Community at intersection of 601 and 675, east of Troutdale. East of Mikes Ridge, bebeen Shupe and Panther Creeks. Wilson Middle Fox Creek
Fox At junction of 711 and 58, 3/4 miles east of mouth of Fox Creek. Named after the foxes found in the area. Wilson Mouth of Wilson
Fries Town on Eastern edge of Grayson County on New River Providence Galax
Fries Heights Community in Fries area. Providence
Galax The largest city in the area. Forms a separate legal government at the same level as Grayson and Carroll County. Named after the galax evergreen herb with leaves widely used for decorations. Galax Galax

Greek PO Community does not exist any more. It was near the west bank of the New River along Beaverdam Creek on 1897 map. Listed as a post office in 1897-1898. Old Town 1897 map
Green Cove In Smyth County, north of Hurricane Mountain. Trout Dale
Greenville Northwest of Galax on 640 at 634 junction. First name for Oldtown. See Oldtown. Old Town Galax

Hackler’s Store Community at intersection of 654 and 694, east of Point Lookout Mt. Topological map incorrectly lists 694 as 843. Elk Creek Brierpatch Mt
Harrington Settlement (Bethel Community) North of Buck Mt and west of Elk Creek. Now called Bethel Elk Creek Middle Fox Creek
Haw Orchard Community at junction of 747 and US 58.  About 1/3 miles west of entrance to Grayson Highlands Park. Was previously called Julip. Wilson Grassy Creek

Independence County Seat of Grayson County at intersection of US 21 and US 58. Named for the “independent” group in the 1849 decision to move the county seat from Old Town. Elk Creek Sparta West

Long’s Gap Community is on Highway 21, South of Elk Creek. Named for the local residents. Elk Creek Elk Creek

Major Community one mile east of Barton’s Cross Roads on Flatridge Rd. Named Wilson by Jacob Grubb after a major he knew in the Civil War. Wilson Middle Fox Creek
McCamant Hill Community 1.5 miles south of Galax city limits west of 89, along 619. Old Town Galax
Mill Creek Community at junction of 58 and 725, east of Grayson Highlands Park. Wilson Grassy Creek

Mouth of Wilson Community at mouth of Wilson Creek on Highway 58. Named for the location where the Wilson Creek joins the New River. Wilson Mouth of Wilson
Newtown Black Community east of Independence on old Fries road. Elk Creek

Providence Community at intersection of 94 and 648, blacksmiths from North Carolina. Providence Brierpatch Mt.
Reavistown Community at intersection of new 58 and Clear Fork, west of Galax. Named for the early settlers, John and Sandy Reavis, blacksmiths from North Carolina. Old Town Galax

Roberts Cove Community/valley on Blue Springs Rd. Newlands Ridge on west and Bald Rock Ridge on east. Wilson Middle Fox Creek
Rocky Hollow (Piney Peak) Community on Rocky Hollow Rd. Southwest of Trout Dale. Wilson
Round Meadows (Hampton Valley ) Community near Reavistown in SE area of County. Hampton Valley was named because of Griggs and Phyllis Sutherland Hampton who settled there in the 1830’s Old Town
Rugby Community found south of Highway 58 at intersection of 743 and 725. Named for the rugged mountain scenery. Wilson Grassy Creek

Spring Valley Community on northeast of Brierpatch Mt. and on Knob Fork. Providence Brierpatch Mt.
Stevens Creek (Stephens Creek) Community northeast of Stevens Creek, northwest of Fries, on 647. Listed as a post office in 1877 -18 7 8. Providence Galax

Volney Seventeen miles west of Independence at intersection of 58 and 16. Named after Volney Hash, the son of E. C. Hash who established a post office. Wilson Grassy Creek

Windytown Community in Fries area. Providence
